When there is talk pertaining to travel and exploration in the middle ages, the mention of the name Marco Polo is inevitable. In addition to that, the names of the Mongols, Kublai Khan, and the Silk Road also seem to come with the package. So what is the relation between them exactly? To the people with an inadequate knowledge of the middle ages these names are but single entities that have no connection whatsoever. But in reality, to truly grasp the great deed that Marco Polo has accomplished, one must attain an advanced level of expertise of the situations and meanings of those words during the Medieval Era. The Mongols were a band of nomadic tribes who occupied the country which is known as Mongolia in present time. During the thirteenth century these tribes united under the leadership of Genghis Khan (1162-1227).
